    Andor Basch (1885-1944) began his studies in 1904 at the drawing school in Budapest under Tivadar Zemplényi. From 1905-10 he attended the Académie Julian in Paris and was pupil of Jean Paul Laurens and Henri Matisse. During the summer months he visited the artist’ colony Nagybánya a couple of times.

    During World War I he served as war artist; from this time many detailed descriptions of war events originate, for example In the Trenches Before the Attack from 1918. From 1920-31 he lived in Paris and Italy and only in 1935 returned to Budapest.

    Basch’s works are on display at several museums, such as Budapest National Gallery and just there at the Museum of Military History. (nlu)
