Andor Basch (1885-1944) began his studies in 1904 at the drawing school in Budapest under Tivadar Zemplényi. From 1905-10 he attended the Académie Julian in Paris and was pupil of Jean Paul Laurens and Henri Matisse. During the summer months he visited the artist’ colony Nagybánya a couple of times. During World War I he served as war artist; from this time many detailed descriptions of war events originate, for example In the Trenches Before the Attack from 1918.
