He worked for the Willcox Lumber Company of Lake Park, Minnesota, before he "remembered the Maine" and joined the US Army in June, 1898. Rolle served during the Spanish-American War with the 3rd U.S. Infantry at Fort Snelling, Minnesota and fought in a small police action against the Chippewa tribe.
