    Ben Willikens was born in 1939. He first studied philosophy and literature in Hamburg. In 1962, he changed into the art class of Heinz Trökes at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart and received various scholarships.

    He traveled to London, Florence, and Rome, where he met his fellow artists Markus Lüpertz, Michael Schönholz and Ansgar Nierhoff. In 1977, Willikens was a professor at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Pforzheim, followed by a professorship for painting and printmaking at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Braunschweig.

    Since 1999, Willikens was a professor at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, and held the presidency there from 1999-2004....
