Bohumir Matal was born in 1922 in Brno. Matal was educated at the Art School in Brno and was among the members of the Czech art group "Group 42", which was officially founded in 1942. The group was mainly influenced by Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism and Surrealism. Due to anti-fascist activities Matal was sent to a labor camp in Germany from 1941, from which he returned in diseased condition. It was only back in his home that he began to paint again, and his works are mainly determined by the themes of human existence, the cities and civilizations and Industrialization. As the political situation in the 1950s changed, Matal founded the group "Brno 57"....
