Bohumir Matal was born in 1922 in Brno. Matal was educated at the Art School in Brno and was among the members of the Czech art group "Group 42", which was officially founded in 1942. The group was mainly influenced by Cubism, Futurism, Constructivism and Surrealism. Due to anti-fascist activities Matal was sent to a labor camp in Germany from 1941, from which he returned in diseased condition.
