    Carl Max Rebel was born in Berlin and studied until 1894 at the Berlin Academy under Woldemar Friedrich and Josef Scheurenberg.  Thereafter he spend many years of study in Italy, Holland and in the Lüneburger Heide (Northern Germany).

    His preferred subjects were landscapes, portrait, nude, still life and theatrical subjects.  His work was mainly influenced by the artists Böcklin, Feuerbach and Thoma.  He focused for four decades on the personality of the poet Stefan George.

    In 1943 his Berlin studio was bombed and his life's work lost.  Then he settled in Schneverdingen, in the Lüneburger Heide, and dedicated himself to religious subjects and allegories. (vwe)
