    Carl Zimmerman was born in Viehofen, Austria, on September 8, 1870. He finished elementary school, 8th grade, and was self-taught in wood carving and art. He married Anna King in Vienna on June 4, 1893 (or 94) and had three children: Carl, Christine, and Otto, all born in Vienna (respectively 1895, 1897, and 1898). Last residing at Vienna, Austria, he sailed from Trieste, Italy, on the Slavonia and arrived at New York on Nov. 30, 1906.

    He first settled in San Francisco. There, following the earthquake of 1906, he had a woodworking workshop at 421 Coylton St. (in L.A.)*, and enjoyed good business in the rebuilding of the city where he carved ornate items such as mantels fo...
