He finished elementary school, 8th grade, and was self-taught in wood carving and art. He married Anna King in Vienna on June 4, 1893 (or 94) and had three children: Carl, Christine, and Otto, all born in Vienna (respectively 1895, 1897, and 1898). He married Anna King in Vienna on June 4, 1893 (or 94) and had three children: Carl, Christine, and Otto, all born in Vienna (respectively 1895, 1897, and 1898). There, following the earthquake of 1906, he had a woodworking workshop at 421 Coylton St. (in L.A.)*, and enjoyed good business in the rebuilding of the city where he carved ornate items such as mantels for clients.
