    Born in Torres Novas in 1863, Carlos Reis attended the School of Fine Arts, thanks to the financial support of King D. Carlos, where he was a student of Simões de Almeida, Miguel Lúpi and Silva Porto.

    In 1889, he left for Paris on a state scholarship, and a year later was admitted to the L'école des Beaux-Arts in the atelier of J. Blanc de Dupain and L. Bonnat.

    He was founder and head of the "Free Air Group", later the "Silva Porto Group". Academician of merit, in 1896, he won the competition for professor of Landscape Painting at the Lisbon School of Fine Arts.
