Carlos, where he was a student of Simões de Almeida, Miguel Lúpi and Silva Porto. In 1889, he left for Paris on a state scholarship, and a year later was admitted to the L'école des Beaux-Arts in the atelier of J. Blanc de Dupain and L. Bonnat.
