    Charles Louis Lassell was born March 5, 1894, in the little town of Greenwood, Mass., near Boston. The family was one of modest means and much talent. One cousin was Ayden Lassell Ripley, watercolorist; another Leurline Ripley, fashion artist; his uncle, Ayden Ripley sr. was a musician with the Boston Symphony.

    As a teenager, LaSalle worked his way through Boston's Fenway School of Illustration doing any number of odd jobs, from modeling for his instructors to working as nightwatchman at a railroad crossing. He hunted and trapped in winter and sold the skins to the Hudwons Bay Company.
