    David Cox (1783-1859) was a distinguished British landscape painter of watercolor and later in life, oils.

    Born at Detitend, near Birmingham, Cox exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1805. He was President of the Associated Artists in Watercolour in 1810 and was elected a Member of the Society in 1813.

    Cox lived in Hereford and London from 1817 to 1840, while continuing to visit Birmingham and exhibiting at the Birmingham Society of Artists. Cox relied largely on teaching at Military Staff College, Farnham and Miss Croucher's girl's school in Hereford to support himself and his family. He wrote several treatises on landscape painting in watercolor including Ackermann's New Drawing Book...
