    Diederick George During (1917 - 1991)
    Diederick During was a significant South African Modernist painter in the mid-twentieth century, and it is often remarked by art historians and critics how little is written about him. Having studied under Belgian painter, Maurice van Essche, at the Wits Technical College around the early 1940s, During adopted van Essche's essentially Modernist idiom, experimenting particularly with the aesthetic forms of Surrealist and Cubist practice.

    Before 1950, he primarily worked in tempera washes, moving only later in his career to acrylics and oil paint. The painting also evokes a Cubist influence, which began to appear in During's paintings around 1945. During's works show his ability to weave togethRussel Kaplan Auction House
