Having studied under Belgian painter, Maurice van Essche, at the Wits Technical College around the early 1940s, During adopted van Essche's essentially Modernist idiom, experimenting particularly with the aesthetic forms of Surrealist and Cubist practice. Before 1950, he primarily worked in tempera washes, moving only later in his career to acrylics and oil paint.
