    Ferdinand Spindel was born in 1913. He was an apprentice as a graphic artist at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen at Max Buchartz. Starting in 1947, he worked as a self-employed artist.

    In 1957, Spindel became a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund. In 1963, he joined the artist residence Halfmannshof in Gelsenkirchen. In that same year, Spindel discovered foam as his primary artistic means of expression. He destroyed a majority of the work he had created until then.

    He continued to experiment with foam objects, foam reliefs, and foam rooms. Spindel was in contact with the artist group Zero. In 1969, he was among the founders of the artist group B1.
