His style was impressionist, and one of his most successful paintings is titled Fire-swept, Algoma of 1920, which he completed on a painting trip to the wilderness of Ontario with Harris and J. W.G. (Jock) Macdonald (1897-1960). These men were highly influential on Johnston's painting. However, because of the more decorative tendencies of his work and his desire for creative independence, Johnston fell away from the Group of Seven. He left Toronto in 1921... Read full biography
