His style was impressionist, and one of his most successful paintings is titled Fire-swept, Algoma of 1920, which he completed on a painting trip to the wilderness of Ontario with Harris and J. W.G. (Jock) Macdonald (1897-1960). These men were highly influential on Johnston's painting.
