About Frank Algernon Stewart

    Educated in Hastings, Frank Algernon Stewart painter studied art under George Ward at Rochester, Fred Brown at the Slade, and at Calderons. He became war artist to The Illustrated London News and in October, 1899 went to Africa where he saw action at Colenso, Spin Kop, Monti Christo and the releif of Ladysmith.


    He was invalided home and in 1901 went to Paris to study at Academie Julian's. On returning to England he married, and he and his wife, Muriel Winifred, spent their later life at Southern House, Albert Road, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.


    Stewart was a keen hunting man and his work was predominantly of hunting scenes. In later life he was forced to give up hunting scenes as the result of...
