During the late 1860s and early 1870s he lived in San Francisco where his son was born. He also owned three lots in East Oakland. Frederick Spang was born in Norristown, Pa in 1834. He studied in Philadelphia with Professor J .R. Lambdin. Spang, along with his artist brother William, enlisted and served in the 15th Pa. Volunteer Calvary during the Civil War. After the war, Frederick Spang resumed his painting career in Reading, PA. He was known for his portrait paintings, along with his fine paintings of still lifes, landscapes, and animals. He died in 1891.
