About Frederick Spang

  • Biography

    Born in Norristown, PA on Jan. 31, 1834. Spang was educated in his native city and studied art in Philadelphia under J. R. Lambdin. After serving in the Civil War, he had a studio in Reading, PA. During the late 1860s and early 1870s he lived in San Francisco where his son was born. He also owned three lots in East Oakland. The local press gave favorable mentions of his portraits, still lifes, and bird studies. He later returned to Reading and was active there until his death on Nov. 21, 1891.
