Friedrich Eibner took drawing classes at the local art school in his hometown before teaching himself how to be a painter. At the young age of 22, he achieved his first success with a painting of the Munich Town Hall.

Eibner specialized in architectural painting, at first depicting only Bavarian monuments before traveling to the Rhine Valley, Northern Italy and France.

In 1860 he was invited by the Russian Prince Aleksander Mestchersky to accompany him on a trip to Spain, where he possibly sketched the subject of the present painting.
