Eibner specialized in architectural painting, at first depicting only Bavarian monuments before traveling to the Rhine Valley, Northern Italy and France. In 1860 he was invited by the Russian Prince Aleksander Mestchersky to accompany him on a trip to Spain, where he possibly sketched the subject of the present painting. The works were of such quality that they were published upon his return.
