    Gyrth Russell RBA, RI, ROI, RSMA (1892 - 1970)

    Gyrth Russell was an expatriate Canadian painter, illustrator, draughtsman, author, commercial artist, printmaker, and war artist. Though he spent most of his life in the British Isles, he established a distinguished reputation early in his career in Canada, and consequently has numerous works in several important museum collections there.

    Russell was born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, a suburb of Halifax and his residence until 1911. He died in Penarth, Wales, a few miles south of Cardiff. He lived in the British Isles almost continuously since the outbreak of World War I when he left school in France and moved to Rye (c. 1915), on the south...
