Though he spent most of his life in the British Isles, he established a distinguished reputation early in his career in Canada, and consequently has numerous works in several important museum collections there. Though he spent most of his life in the British Isles, he established a distinguished reputation early in his career in Canada, and consequently has numerous works in several important museum collections there. Russell was born in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada, a suburb of Halifax and his residence until 1911. He died in Penarth, Wales, a few miles south of Cardiff. He lived in the British Isles almost continuously since the outbreak of World War I when he left school in France and moved to Rye (c. 1915), on the southwest coast of England.
