Jan Hendrik Scheltema was born on August 23, 1861 in The Hague, Netherlands. He died on December 9, 1941, in Brisbane, Australia. He was a Dutch painter, who became an Australian citizen on February 10, 1935. He arrived already in Australia in 1888 and went on to have a prolific and successful career there, despite being a non-British migrant artist without an international reputation when he arrived.

Scheltema already showed an early interest in art as an elementary school boy: He received training in various studios and academies in the Netherlands and Belgium.
