He was a Dutch painter, who became an Australian citizen on February 10, 1935. He arrived already in Australia in 1888 and went on to have a prolific and successful career there, despite being a non-British migrant artist without an international reputation when he arrived. Scheltema already showed an early interest in art as an elementary school boy: He received training in various studios and academies in the Netherlands and Belgium. He was a Dutch painter, who became an Australian citizen on February 10, 1935. He arrived already in Australia in 1888 and went on to have a prolific and successful career there, despite being a non-British migrant artist without an international reputation when he arrived. Scheltema already showed an early interest in art as an elementary school boy: He received training in various studios and academies in the Netherlands and Belgium. He was taught in the studio of Johannes Bergsi in Rotterdam in the 1870s. When living in Gouda in the late 1870’s, he trained there with painter Johannes Bertelman, the town’s ‘drawing master’ who guided his submission to the Dutch King's scholarship committee.
