    Jean Discart was born in the Italian city of Modena in 1856, and at the age of seventeen the artist was in Vienna, where he enrolled in a history of painting course at the Academy of Fine Arts. Discart was taught by Anselm Feuerbach (1829-1880), and he studied alongside Ludwig Deutsch (1855-1935) and Karl Merode (1853-1909), amongst others. He was later also taught by Leopold Carl Müller (1834-1892), albeit after initially being refused admittance.

    Discart traveled and spent time in Paris, and began to exhibit at the Pairs Salon in 1884, and continued to paint Orientalist subjects through to the 1920s.
