Being eligible for the G.I. bill, he enrolled in the summer of 1946 as a freshman at the State University of Iowa campus at Iowa City. By his own admission, his concept of art was very limited. In the fall of 1948, he studied print-making under the auspices of Mauricio Lasansky, an internationally-known print maker, who was teaching at the time.
