After graduation from high school in 1943, he was drafted in the army where he served with a field artillery battery in the Far East campaign. Being eligible for the G.I. bill, he enrolled in the summer of 1946 as a freshman at the State University of Iowa campus at Iowa City. By his own admission, his concept of art was very limited. In... Being eligible for the G.I. bill, he enrolled in the summer of 1946 as a freshman at the State University of Iowa campus at Iowa City. By his own admission, his concept of art was very limited. In the fall of 1948, he studied print-making under the auspices of Mauricio Lasansky, an internationally-known print maker, who was teaching at the time.
