    Born at Leigh, Lancashire, Joseph Farington was the elder brother of the historical painter George Farington. Joseph was a pupil of Richard Wilson, and from 1778 to 1813 he exhibited constantly at the Royal Academy. He was elected an Associate in 1783, and an Academician in 1785. He was also a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists.

    He painted many landscapes of Cumberland and Westmorland. He made a tour of Scotland and left a diary, which was edited by James Greig in 1923, and in Volume I of which this dinner-party list is noted: 'July 20 (1792) - At dinner there came Mr Hamilton Captain Gordon Captain Patrick Millar Mr Burns the Scottish Poet, at present an Exciseman in Dumfries,...
