He made a tour of Scotland and left a diary, which was edited by James Greig in 1923, and in Volume I of which this dinner-party list is noted: 'July 20 (1792) - At dinner there came Mr Hamilton Captain Gordon Captain Patrick Millar Mr Burns the Scottish Poet, at present an Exciseman in Dumfries, on £70 a year.
