    Karl Ortelt studied at the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts under Alfred Hierl from 1934 to 1940. After military service and his release from captivity as a prisoner of war, he initially lived as a freelance artist in Engelsrod, Hesse, but moved to the former GDR in 1950. From 1951, he was a lecturer in mural painting and mural design at the Department of Fine Arts of the Weimar Academy of Architecture. However, he soon became embroiled in the Formalism debate and subsequently withdrew from public life. In the following years, he created works that moved away from Realism, increasingly exhibiting expressive and abstract features. After moving to East Germany, Karl Ortelt repeatedly visited Hiddensee in the 1950s....
