From 1951, he was a lecturer in mural painting and mural design at the Department of Fine Arts of the Weimar Academy of Architecture. However, he soon became embroiled in the Formalism debate and subsequently withdrew from public life. In the following years, he created works that moved away from Realism, increasingly exhibiting expressive and abstract features.
