Leonardus Joseph (Leo) Eland was born in Salatiga, Central Java in 1884. Leonardus is known as the painter of ‘Mooi Indië’, and was a successful artist in the first half of the twentieth century. Eland became inspired by his friend, the well-known Indonesian painter Carel Dake Jr, son of a professor at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, who advised him on painting. Eland spent the first half of his life on the tropical islands - Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi and Bali - before moving back to the Netherlands where he worked from his atelier in The Hague on his ‘Mooi-Indië’ paintings.
