Leonardus Joseph (Leo) Eland was born in Salatiga, Central Java in 1884. Leonardus is known as the painter of ‘Mooi Indië’, and was a successful artist in the first half of the twentieth century. Eland became inspired by his friend, the well-known Indonesian painter Carel Dake Jr, son of a professor at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, who advised him on painting. Leonardus Joseph (Leo) Eland was born in Salatiga, Central Java in 1884. Leonardus is known as the painter of ‘Mooi Indië’, and was a successful artist in the first half of the twentieth century. Eland became inspired by his friend, the well-known Indonesian painter Carel Dake Jr, son of a professor at the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, who advised him on painting. Eland spent the first half of his life on the tropical islands - Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi and Bali - before moving back to the Netherlands where he worked from his atelier in The Hague on his ‘Mooi-Indië’ paintings.
