    Luca Giordano was born in Naples, Italy in 1632 or 1634. He was the son and pupil of the painter Antonio Giordano, whom he is said to have outdistanced as a painter at the age of eight. He later studied under Ribera. For some time he was in the service of the painter Pietro da Cortona, whose style and methods he assimilated almost to the extent of mimicry. He had, as a matter of fact, a particular talent for imitating almost any painter's technique, and for a time he earned his living making copies of the masters.
