There from 1853-56 he worked as a gilder in Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt for ecclesiastical art. He studied from 1856 at the Munich academy at Hermann Anschütz with Johann Georg Hiltensperger and Johann Schraudolph and maintained friendship with Franz von Defregger. He was also temporarily active in Innsbruck.
