In 1850 Schmid took an apprenticeship with Gottlieb Egger for Tuifelemaler in Tarrenz. In 1853 he was in Munich. In 1850 Schmid took an apprenticeship with Gottlieb Egger for Tuifelemaler in Tarrenz. In 1853 he was in Munich. There from 1853-56 he worked as a gilder in Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt for ecclesiastical art.
