    Medard Maertens was born in 1875. Maertens trained in academies Tielt, Roeselare and Antwerp Médard Maertens (1875-1944) before settling around 1900 in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. Maertens befriended them the Brabant Griffon. During a stay in Paris, he met Martha Guillain, whom he married.

    His workshop in Nogent-sur-Marne was the Belgian artists rallying point in France. In the 20s, he spent Luminism Fauvism, with figures with pronounced contours. The palette of Medard Maertens was rather dark compared to Rik Wouters and De Kat. In his work, there are also traces of Cubism. He was also a class member of "The Furrow" and "La Libre Esthetique".
