Medard Maertens was born in 1875. Maertens trained in academies Tielt, Roeselare and Antwerp Médard Maertens (1875-1944) before settling around 1900 in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert. Maertens befriended them the Brabant Griffon. During a stay in Paris, he met Martha Guillain, whom he married. His workshop in Nogent-sur-Marne was the Belgian artists rallying point in France.
