About Michelle Stuart

  • Biography

    A resident of SoHo in New York City during the winter and Long Island in the summer, she creates sculpture that is delicate seed drawings or seed arrangements from objects she finds in nature. Stuart believes that seeds reflect the cycles of life and death.

    She is essentially self taught and has worked in everything from earth pieces to monumental pieces of paper sculpture. In 1979, she arranged 3200 boulders for her earthwork "Stone Alignments/Solstice Cairns, and in the 1980s made encaustic grids.

    She was raised as an only child in Los Angeles by a Swiss mother and an Australian father, who often drove her into the desert for family outings. At age 17, she went to Mexico by herself and earned an apprenticeship painting mural...
