He attended school in Hamburg. In 1898 he lived in an apartment in his parents' house on the Falkenstein on the Elbe. In 1898-99 he took painting lessons with Georg Burmester in Kiel and in 1900 in Hamburg he studied under Ernst Eitner at the art school.
