About Prudencio Irazabal

  • Biography

Known for monochromatic paintings of layered paint, some of them three-dimensional appearing, he was born in the Basque country of northwestern Spain.

He studied art in Seville and Barcelona and taught art and showed his early work in Spain before heading to New York in 1986. He had a foreign-study grant that allowed him to focus on printmaking at Columbia University, and eventually he and his photographer wife settled in Manhattan where he had his studio in Chinatown. By the late 1980s, his works consisted of pure black and copper pigments, and he painted on porous, non-woven fabric with the idea of exploring the physical nature of his canvas as well as the paint itself.
