He studied art in Seville and Barcelona and taught art and showed his early work in Spain before heading to New York in 1986. By the late 1980s, his works consisted of pure black and copper pigments, and he painted on porous, non-woven fabric with the idea of exploring the physical nature of his canvas as well as the paint itself.
