    Robert Muller was a pioneer of iron sculpture. Departing from the traditional exploration of the figure, Muller worked in increasingly abstract styles as his career evolved, eventually progressing towards multipiece metal assemblages. Beginning with meticulous draughtsmanship and painted studies, Muller often formed pieces separately before assembling them into unnervingly surreal objects and biomorphic forms. Muller was born in Zurich, Switzerland in 1920. He began his career working for artists Germaine Richier and Charles Otto Bänniger, who were major influences on Muller's early works. In 1949 he moved to Paris, where he began creating his iron sculptures and was introduced to Julio Gonzalez, another major influence. After the 1960...
