    Theodor Werner ( 1886-1969)

    Born in Jettenburg/Württemberg, Germany, Werner became a certified teacher and studied art at the Stuttgart Academy with Robert Poetzelsberger in 1908/09. He went to Paris, France several times between 1909 and 1914 to study art, including at the studio of Charles Guérin.

    Following his military service Werner lived as a freelance painter in Großsachsenheim near Stuttgart until 1929. In 1930 he moved to Paris where he became member of the artists' group 'Abstraction Création'. One year later he married the woman painter Anneliese Rütgers, called Woty.

    He returned to Germany in 1935 but his work was branded "entartete Kunst" and he was was banned from painting and exhibiting.<...
