About Volker Bohringer

  • Biography

Born in Esslingen in 1912, Volker Böhringer was, along with George Grosz and Otto Dix, an important German representative of New Objectivity and Surrealism. After his childhood in Esslingen, in 1929 Böhringer began his studies at the Württemberg State School of Applied Arts in Stuttgart with Ernst Schneider.

In 1930 he moved to the Academy and continued his studies with Hans Spiegel. During the period of National Socialism, he was banned from working and exhibiting. Secretly he painted in his parents' house until a serious illness forced him to stay in a sanatorium for many years.

Due to his health condition, the watercolor and the drawing were among the preferred techniques of his former work.
