She was born on 6 September 1883 in Roxbury, Massachusetts to John Rupp and Emily Wiswell Wilder Withington. Her father was a long time Jamaica Plains, Boston resident who worked for several decades as a Boston customs house clerk. The Withington family came to Massachusetts in the 1630s.
