He spent his youth in Los Angeles but later lived in the Big Sur area and then settled near Santa Barbara. For fifteen years, he was a commercial artist, creating everything from billboards to aerospace drawings, but changed to fine art and plein-air painting to combine his love of the outdoors with painting. In 2000, he received the $10,000 Granville Redmond Memorial Purchase Prize for his landscape "New Dawn," which is the inaugural purchase for the California Art Academy and Museum in Pasadena, California, a facility that opened in 2002.
